Let's try and use this blog as a line of communication outside of class. I am learning how to use eBlogger as we go here, but my thinking is that it will be useful for you to be in contact with each other for course topics.

Since the calorimetry lab is probably the issue in the forefront of everyone's mind right now, I will try and get the conversation started by sharing this link (http://www.chm.davidson.edu/
ChemistryApplets/calorimetry/
HeatCapacityOfCalorimeter.html) about determining heat loss to a calorimeter. It has a cool applet too!
I was able to log in with my google account username and password. If you don't have a google account (the same thing as gmail), you should sign up for one. It is free, and you may like it! If you are having trouble, I am sure this Mr. Balicki character will help you.
I can post!
chemistry for life
i like cheese. just checking
hey i like cheese too!!!!
Do still have to do lab on wednesday because that wouldn't be too fun, u know...
yeah, I'm pretty sure that we still have the lab on wednesday.
It is optional to work on it Wednesday R3. More details in class Tuesday.
Does anybody know if we skip any questions for the lab? Because I think we skip Part II question 5 and I'm not sure if we skip everything else.
I think I may have recorded which gases were which in class (argon and neon specifically), because when I looked up thier respective spectras, they came out opposite what I found during class. I just wanted to check and see what someone else observed for Neon and Argon, and what they found for thier emission spectras.
For one I observed: -many lines-glowed orange-purple lines, lots of green lines, one wide bright orange line, few bright red lines
For the other I observed: -many lines- glowed bright white, maybe pink- multiple lines, mostly red, some green and blue
If anyone can help me in my mixup, that'd be great, thanks.
what is
Ephoton = hc / λ
E photon = h (planck's constant) * c (speed of light) / wavelength of the photon
the bohr model questions refer to this equations as a way to predict the energy levels from and to which the electron jumps
btw this is Sasha writing, my name comes up in Russian because of the gmail setting...
Yes... it is possible to do chemistry at 2:30 in the morning on the day the lab is due. (but my lab was done WAY before now)
My solutions to the LDS structure worksheet are posted to the website for your studying pleasure.
im confused why that H3PO4 was sp3d2 on the answers u posted by today you wrote on the board sp3d
I don't want to say it, but I told you so. Now she won't give me detention.
For H3PO4, since there are 4 electron domains with 5 bonds, 1 is a pi, and 4 are sigma. Therefore, the hybridization should actually just be sp3, with the 5th bond surrounding the central p being a pi bond, which is unhybridized. Enjoy Friday off, and just bump the schedule back one day; quiz monday, HW due tuesday.
hey do we need to do the prelab?..
Prelabs not dued on monday. And so then the answers for H3PO4 was a mistake. So shouldn't HClO3 be sp3 as well?
It looks like now we are into "term exam" time, so the quiz will have to be postponed until Tuesday. We will do the lab Monday and Wednesday.
So the lab is due tomorrow?
Is monday night's homework (RQ 11.1-11.6) due 2morrow or nextweek?
wow...i should really use this blog more often
check out my cool new avatar!!
i am a chemist in training
does anybody know where the info on the gas laws are?
not the surveys but the actual stuff we're supposed to read to do the survey.
is it possible to post the rubric online on the course site?
does anyone know why we have to put our names on the survey?
so he knows that we took it i'm guessing
Jannie is right, I am keeping track of who completes the survey. The idea with the survey is that if you understand the reading and applets from mastering physics, you will be able to figure out the survey. Also, term grades are posted on the course website by ID#. See everybody tomorrow!
For scheduling purposes, just push everything back one day. HW is due tomorrow (only through 1/12) and try to keep up with reading. We will work on the "properties of substances" assignment tomorrow, and the quiz will be Thursday. If you're shoveling (as I am), remember to lift with the legs, not with the back! :)
did i mention my new avatar?
Check the website for a schedule of the next couple of days in class
mr. balicki
i have a concern! i am greatly grieved by it and have been dying to get out of my system. it's about how you present yourself to the class. i have a hard time paying attention to you because your current look resembles mr. akeson's. every time i think of mr. akeson, i end up laughing because he is such a funny man. if you could, would you please revert to your old look? please shave.
a very worried student
haha..yes Mr. Balicki...I agree..I believe that this is what everyone wants
leave mr. balicki alone! he's a G
Dear Mr. Balicki,
As much as you love your "new" look. I must agree with poster anonymous for s/he has brought up a very good point. The world is moving on, we should not return to the past when cavemen existed.
Please shave ASAP.
Sincerely,
Another very worried student
Not to be at all blunt, but I think it's time we use the ap chem discussion group for chemistry and leave the facial hair issue behind. It may not be free country, but just let him do as he wishes with the beard.
most cordially,
a student not worried about our instuctor's whiskers.
leave the poor man alone. he is distressed enough from dealing with chaofan.
Time on task, guys!
Mr. Balicki, you should really consider making a forum. I think dicussions would work much better there since things can be sorted into topics/threads.
Thats a good idea; can you teach me how to do it?
http://invisionfree.com/ provides free service. I've only been a moderator; never actually administered/created a forum. I'm sure it's pretty straight forward though.
are the solutions to the the worksheet posted yet??????
are you going to post equilibrium calc 4 solutions yet?
where is the link for the solutions to equilibrium calculations 4 ?
Yikes, what would we all do if my computer broke? Solutions are posted on the website.
It is safe to say that if any malady were to inflict Mr. Balicki's computer, deeming it no longer functional, the natural order of the homework-study process would be compromised to an extensive degree. Or we could make awkward conversation with our classmates as a way of warming them up to the question: "so what did you get for number three?"
What do we have to pass in tomorrow? The rest of tonight depends on this answer...I plan around chemistry like it's nobody's business.
Read the "exploring electrochemistry" lab #17 and do the prelab questions. The lab is actually more about equilibrium than electrochemistry, but I think it will be nice for you to see the connections. The chapter 19 RQ are not due tomorrow.
Smart clothes need to be worn every time there's a test!
Is the electrochemistry lab still due tomorrow?
hey mr. balicki when are you posting our grades?
Good point. For juniors, they are posted.
Anybody who would be willing to spend R6 and R7 reviewing practice problems can see me in the morning for a pass.
Completely up to you.
yo mr. balicki, can you post all the answers to the mult. choice portion of the chem Ap practice test? thx
hey you can't have a party tomorrow in class tomorrow! i won't be there! a bunch of us still have ap's tomorrow! and you know it's no party without me!
BAHJAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!
